Nov. 3, 2012 - Merrick, New York, U.S. - U.S. Army National Guard members from Syracuse, NY, are at the Merrick Hess gas station, one of the Long Island gas stations open the Saturday after Hurricane Sandy battered this south shore area, to help Nassau County police maintain order in the long lines of people waiting their turn at the pumps. The Freeport Armory in the next town was supposed to have free gas, up to 10 gallons for each car, this day, but people who showed up there were turned away. About 500,000 of the 1.2 million Long Islanders who lost power still didn't have it, and the area continued to suffer from severe damage from floods and wind.
