Nov. 3, 2012 - Merrick, New York, U.S. - People carrying gas containers wait on long lines at Hess, one of the Long Island gas stations open the Saturday after Hurricane Sandy battered this south shore area. U.S. Army National Guard members from Syracuse were at the station to help Nassau County police maintain order. The Freeport Armory in the next town was supposed to have free gas, up to 10 gallons for each car, this day, but people who showed up there were turned away. About 500,000 of the 1.2 million Long Islanders who lost power still didn't have it, and the area continued to suffer from severe damage from floods and wind.
